Graphite and Silkscreen on paper

2022

This drawing and print work is a meditative homage to ancestry, land, and memory. I combined traditional graphite drawing with silkscreen typography to explore the intimate connections between place and identity. The landscape, rendered in expressive grayscale tones, depicts a mountainous region beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. Through dark and textured mark-making, I capture both the physical weight of the terrain and its metaphorical depth.

Layered over the image is a bilingual phrase: Nuestros antepasados están en las montañas / Our ancestors are in the mountains. The soft blue serif text floats gently across the sky, acting as a spiritual bridge between the land and the viewer. For me, this phrase embodies a profound cultural reverence for the natural world as a repository of memory, identity, and ancestral presence. The mountains are more than geological formations; they are sacred spaces, guardians of history, and silent witnesses to the passage of time.

By weaving together text and image, language and land, I reflect on the ways geography and genealogy intersect, especially within the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. The bilingual text affirms cultural hybridity and honors those who live between languages and histories. This work is an offering—an altar built from image and word, grounded in reverence and remembrance.
